Osage Nation Department of Environmental and Natural Resources

The Osage Nation Reservation covers an area of approximately 1,475,000 acres corresponding to the boundary of Osage County, Oklahoma and the tribe owns 100% of the extensive mineral rights located within the reservation. The Osage Nation’s Department of Environmental and Natural Resources (ENR) is tasked with protecting human health and the environment and preserving natural resources. 

For many years, the ENR used ArcView 3.2a with a number of custom scripts to aid in the management of its environmental resources. As ENR’s duties expanded, the tribe realized the necessity of updating the antiquated system and hired Coordinate Solutions to migrate the GIS from ArcView 3.2a to ArcGIS desktop, ArcSDE, and ArcIMS. Coordinate Solutions designed a geodatabase schema for ENR and migrated all of ENR’s data from file based formats (shapefiles, dbfs, etc.) to a relational database (SQLServer). Moreover, to minimize the redundancy frequently associated with desktop GIS solutions, Coordinate Solutions developed a web-based enterprise GIS solution with a number of customized tools using ArcIMS in combination with VB.NET and ASP.NET.

To aid in the process of field inspections, Coordinate Solutions developed a customized mobile GIS application called Detached GIS enabling access to the same geographic information as stored in the enterprise GIS.

Building on the success of earlier efforts, Coordinate Solutions customized the Ground Water Protection Council's Data Mining system for the ENR. The system allows for full text and attribute-based search of the ENR's databases, complete details for production and injection wells, and an integrated GIS map. You can view the results here.
